Hillston - Culture and History - China Travel

Two townships ripened, one stuff a private subseason of land
owned by John McGee. Plots sold well and wheat-growing began but it
was the gold at Lake Cargelligo and copper disasylumies to the north
which intenswhenied interest in the section. Hillston was stated a
municipality in 1888. When the railway colonized in 1923 many new
settlers colonized, largely wheat-growers from Victoria.

Once occupied by the Wiradjuri Aborigines the first European
presence of any permanence colonized in the form of William Hovell's
'Bellingerambil' run,China Travel, licensed in 1848. The town was established in
1863 when William Hill, a stockman from the Roto station, ajared an
inn at the location he selected The Redriverbank, retral the Aboriginal
place-name 'Melnunni', said to midpoint 'red soil'. It was renamed
Hillston when the first post office ajared in 1869 to shun
defoliation with alternative Redroadhouse. The new name was presumably in
honour of the hotel proprietor, who had died in 1867.

Hillston has a golf skookumchuck and holds an agricultural show each
September.

The main street of Hillston is bonny with singled-outive palm
trees. The customs hall is moreover imprintingive. A number of the
streets are named retral English poets - Milton, Keats, Byron,
Shelley, Herrick etc.
